Lodging first night on Tanna

Written 13-May-2010 @ 8:40 PM

The late arriving freighter wasn’t the only bump in the road Pastor Tomas had encountered with regards to the One Day church business since arriving home, however.

When he went to look over the guest accommodations he had lined up for us, he flipped the switch for the electrical and there was a pop and then a little smoke! Oops! No electricity. So he started to scramble. He found a really nice guest room for us, no kitchen facilities as we had planned, but we can make do with the mini-refrigerator and electric kettle provided.

The bathroom portion of the room is thatched and there is a tree inside the shower, the roof is simply thatched around it. It sound funky, but it looks really cool. There are only screens, no glass windows. Wooden louvers adjust for privacy. The surf breaks about 200 feet from the beach, which is less than 300 feet from our window, making the loveliest “white noise”. Supposedly, Pastor Tommy has made a good deal with them, but if this is the same Tanna Lodge that I just looked up in our handy-dandy guidebook, this may be the only night we stay here! They have double occupancy prices listed as starting at over 30,000Vu (each worth approximately 1 USA penny)! Either Tommy has some extra ordinary clout…or it is a misprint…or we move out in the morning. It is #16 on the map of Tanna (see blog post before this one).  And yes, those are a pile of water smoothed rocks under the sink.  Again, funky, but works well in this decor.
