The kids were down at the lava rock shore playing in the water as we headed in, their little voices piping through the air. Outrigger canoes dotted the shore line.
Earlier in the day, Aaron had told us a little about their outrigger canoes. As I understand it, the life of a canoe is about 7 years. They use only one species of tree for their canoes, and it take about 7 years for it to grow to a size they can use.
When they find a length of trunk or a more mature branch that is straight and will be just right for a canoe in a few years, they carve their name on it. When I found this tree later in the day, I assumed that the names appearing on this tree are not graffiti, just canoe-claims.
