A local guide came to take Kit and I on a cultural tour Thursday morning.
Moses took us to his village and told the history of the extended family that comprises this village of 800 (a very substantial sized village for Vanuatu).
Evacuated from one island in the 50’s due to volcanic activity only to be evacuated from the new site due to a destructive cyclone, they arrived on this island a sad and sorry group. The men found work on a French owned coconut plantation and used their evenings scouting for a new village site. They found a wonderful site with two sources of fresh water and only a short walk to the beach. Water from the upper source they have piped into the village, gravity provides the necessary pressure.
This particular tour guide takes his groups to a privately run Christian kindergarten located next to the village SDA church.
The kids sing for the visitors he brings and they show their little 10’x15’ school.
Between 15-30 kids attend this diminutive school. Due to the morning rain, it was a low attendance day.
Since our daughter-in-law, Starr, teaches K-2 in Tucson, AZ - I was interested to note the many similarities and the obvious differences.
The arts and crafts hold a very similar look to kindergardens the world around.
Starr, can you imagine all your teaching supplies fitting into one small set of shelving?
